FQ Projects specializes in promoting and developing young contemporary artists. It is located in Huai Hai Fang which is one of the most famous cultural lanes in Shanghai favoured by the Shanghai bourgeois class and where a lot of well-known cultural figures lived during the 1920’ s and 30’ s, such as Ba Jin, Xu Guangping, Xu Beihong and Hu Die. This has created a rich cultural atmosphere for this lane. This area has always been one of the representative places for Shanghai culture. Although after the cultural revolution the prestigious area codes were diluted within Shanghai, one can still feel the coziness and humanity reflecting the original Shanghai ‘sentiments’ in Huai Hai Fang compared to the modern match boxes and concrete jungle just outside on Huai Hai Lu.

FQ is in stark contrast to the drift for Chinese contemporary art to be displayed in warehouse style galleries following the American and North European trend, often set in a few hundred square meters or even thousands. The artworks are “the bigger the better”, exaggeration and overstatement became the mainstream. FQ Projects is presenting artwork that is high in quality, with an emphasis on significance and humanity. Framing them within a real living space and neighborhood scenario, FQ aims to promote and support those thoughtful artworks and artists who differ from the mainstream. This is not only to fill the niche of the restless Chinese contemporary art and fast-food life style, but also to carry a tradition of ‘small but delicate’ Shanghai culture.

FQ Projects mounts a number of thematic exhibitions each year in a variety of media: sculpture, painting, drawing, installation, video and photography at Huai Hai Fang No. 76, each exhibition lasting one and a half month to two months. In certain circumstances No. 76 will be connected with FQ’s office premise and artwork may be viewed in both locations.

No. 76 has 34 sqm with 38 meters exhibiting line (inclu. portable walls), height 3.5 meters. It is divided into main exhibition space on the ground floor, which is 25 sqm and has 29 meters exhibiting line and a small showing space on the first floor, which is 9 sqm with 9 meters exhibiting line.

The courtyard is 12 sqm, can be displayed for exhibitions as well.

The office is 130 sqm with 28 meters exhibiting line.

FQ Projects aim to support and realize those commercially risky but academically interesting art projects from young or new artists. Each year FQ will hold 1-2 collaborative project exhibitions or specifically commissioned works with selected artists.

With the project exhibitions, FQ will organize panel discussions within a wide audience of art professionals, artists, writers, critics, curators, collectors, lecturers, students, and general public. This is to support and develop the ideas of new talents and provide a healthy platform for art in Shanghai.

FQ’s Mini Café is a small heaven in central down town within the old French Concession. During exhibition opening times, come and enjoy an illy cafe with cookies or a glass of new world wine in our sunny bright conservatory — Super!

FQ’s collection is hung at its office, 107 Yan Dang Road Yan Dang Bldg. In addition to being part of the thematic exhibitions for FQ, this place will be showing FQ’s collection around the year.
