Ink Play – Xu Ke’s Contemporary Ink

Ink Play is actually an attitude. Chinese artist are comparably implicit, unwilling to speak out directly, or to describe the reality as it is. XuKe’s painting inherits the spirit of ink play, yet more abstract in a modern way.”

“While XuKe’s life is peaceful and elegant, his art works are dynamic, full of tension. A seemingly quiet person has a heart not tranquil at all! His style is abstract, being traditional and modern at the same time. There is the special charm of ink, yet the art language is unspeakable. Different viewers have different feelings depending on the angle of the view. Those who like his works a lot think them as magnificent and unrestrained, with the ink spreading almost on free will. Those who are not very into the works may say that they are too abstract to grasp. In traditional Chinese culture, people in the culture circle believe in Tao or Zen, which pursue expressing infinite meanings in finite words.”

“Xuke has developed his own modern style, not sticking to the old school, to deliberately making a purpose. This contemporary ink play is still full of fun, expressed in a different way.”

FQ Projects is pleased to present the solo exhibition of contemporary ink wash paintings by XuKe. Through the use of water, ink, rice paper as media, XuKe explores his own understanding on ink word context. The spontaneous contact between those three materials expresses both the mark and rhythm of the ink, creating a synergy with the variations of shade on the paper. This expresses an important semantic of XuKe’s ink wash world.

XuKe works and lives in Shanghai. His works have been exhibited in Western Countries and collected by International Institutions. Since 2012, his works have been exhibited at FQ Projects, including joint exhibitions and three solo shows. Within the past three years, his works were exhibited at Art Stage Singapore, the Shanghai Contemporary Art Fair, and Art 021.
