Unknowingly, Unconsciously:  DAI Mouyu 2015 New Works Solo Exhibition

FQ projects is honored to present Dai Mouyu’s new solo exhibition: Unknowingly, Unconsciously. The exhibition will open on 15th November, and will last until 7th January 2016.

From last year’s exhibition Moments to this year’s Unknowingly, Unconsciously, Dai Mouyu says that he is more able to go with the flow when creating new works. Instead of following flashes of thoughts, the artist let his own breath and energy flow on paper through his pen by themselves, without any intervention of the mind. Mouyu has always been very sensitive to the nuanced changes in energy around him. He carries a sketchbook everywhere, draws down all the sentiments around him, not only his own feelings but also sentiments he felt among other people and objects. “There are sentiments even in a movement like a tea leaf falling to the bottom of the cup”. Large amounts of sketching serve as accumulation of sentiments, which allow him to draw the series of ink-pen works in a leisure state of mind. Various sentiments come out naturally without deliberate planning. For ink-pen works, Mouyu always keeps an eye on not becoming deliberate. “I think that things should be treated in a humble and broad-minded way. I would not add a stroke unless necessary.”

The artist chooses ink-pen as his media because it is the easiest to put into practice, and he is also into the effects of fine lines on warm paper. Mouyu starts drawing everyday from one line. But during the process, he is careful not be trapped by those lines. “The fine lines may kidnap you and then you follow them blind. I need to be alert and get out of such trap. The media is just a carrier, a carrier for you to express some feelings.”

There are often elements like flowers, grasses, leaf branches and stones in Mouyu’s works. This is due to his love of nature, especially when he was a photo journalist and sometimes felt tired of frequent contacts with people, nature made him relaxed. Still, a journalist career for years has a huge influence on the artist. The nature scenes he describes contain certain tension. The nature has bore the impact of human and animals all the time, and Mouyu chooses not to show the impact itself but to draw the natural environment, the carrier of the impact. To quote his own words, they are like “fighting scenes without the fighters.” The trees and grasses far away are swinging, wind is blowing through bamboo forests, and a hint of heroism could be sensed.

Drawing is very personal for Mouyu, he thinks that he has found the proper way in the process and he hopes that he continues to draw in such benign status, line after line, year after year.

Dai Mouyu, born in 1975 in Guandong, graduated from Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts. He now works and lives in Shanghai. His works have been exhibited in Shanghai Art Museum, Shanghai Duolun Museum of Modern Art and many other countries ie. France, Germany and Tai Wan. FQ Projects has exhibited his works in several ShContemporary Art Fairs, Art14 London art fair, Art Busan, Shanghai Art in the City in K11 and Art021 in 2014 , as well as six group exhibitions in FQ Projects. This show Unknowlingly, Unconsciously is his third solo exhibition at FQ Projects.
